Frontalunterricht

Two men show / Espace Paul Ricard, Paris / 2OO3

There used to be a bar in the centre of the Fondation Ricard exhibition space: an odd situation that formed the basis for this project. A large strip of undulating carpet wraps around the bar, runs the entire length of the room, and forms a grandstand at the end. A TV in the bar shows a fictional programme in which two presenters read texts explaining the concept of the Frontalunterricht (lecture, in German). In another room, Grande tête stands opposite a video screen. Just like a lecture entering our own heads, it is possible to go inside Grande tête and ultimately find shelter there. The No smoking sign (a painting) hung under the Lost mirror fans, emitting imaginary smoke, is an other allusion to frontal discursive strategies.
