Bistro chair for Thonet / 2O11
For Corso Bastille, Mr Costes asked me to customise a nº 14 Thonet chair. Rather than come up with yet another designers commentary on this iconic piece of furniture, I decided Id rather create a new chair. Designing a new bistro chair for Thonet is a tough call. My starting point was the fact that chair 214 (historically named "Nº 14") is now rather expensive, which represents a break with Thonets history as the company is renowned for being the first to have achieved worldwide distribution for their furniture thanks to an ingenious dismountable design. Even now, after 40 million chairs have been sold, the back section is still made in a rather traditional way. With chair 107, I focused on a new design for that section, which is now produced using an almost totally automated process..
